Draught proofing

An obvious sign that windows need maintenance is rain and draughts entering through gaps in and around the sashes. Condensation forms on windows or reveals internally and drips down. Sometimes mould is evident too. It’s common for the sides of the walls around window frames (the reveals) to suffer from damp and mould due to cold bridging, as the masonry surrounds act as a pathway between the cold outdoor and warm indoor air. Externally, obvious gaps between frames and surrounding reveals/jambs may be visible.

Proofing Sash Windows

Sash windows can be draughty, particularly older examples. In fact the total amount of escape of heat around a box sash window is equivalent to having a hole about 4” square to the outside world. Fitting double glazing alone if it’s possible (and usually it is not), will not make big difference when it comes to draughts or saving heat escaping.

The answer is to improve the existing sash windows by replacing the staff and parting beads with new timber beads that have a brush pile fitted into pre-cut grooves. There are other benefits besides proofing against draughts: there will be the reduction of outside noise migrating into your home and the elimination of rattle.

Proofing Casement Windows

Casement windows can be affected over time much like the sliding sash. Gaps can open up for a number of reasons such as paint build up, weathering, warping or just general wear. We are able to apply draught proofing to most old and new casement windows. The principal is much the same as our sash window procedure and offers the same benefits.

Proofing Doors

Many of our customers want the same draught-proofing efficiency and high quality repairs on their doors as well. We can shape doors back in and fit our discrete replaceable weather-strip into door edges. This has a huge effect on improving thermal efficiency in the home and even has a damping effect on closing (or slamming) if the wind catches. Clients often use this opportunity to bring doors and frames up to the same standard as their windows.
